Iht (Mh elknd'Hh lenInntani Ur;t:trian JL%I May 7, 1986 CERTIFIED MAIL RETURN RECEIPT REQ' JESTED Mr. Ray R. Jenkins State Water Control Board Piedmont Regional Office 2201 West Broad Street Richmond, Virginia 23230 Surry Power Station - NPDES Permit Exception

Dear Mr. Jenkins:

This is to confirm the information concerning the NPDES permit exception at our Surry Power Station that was previously reported to you by telephone on May 6, 1986.

On April 29, 1986, a composite sample of effluent from Outfall 011, the sewage treatment plant, was collected between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Analytical results received on May 6 revealed a Biological Oxygen Demand (800 ) of 6.75 mg/1. The monthly average which was then calculated using this anb results obtained previously during the month was found to be 32.1 mg/1. This exceeds our monthly average limitation of 30.0 mg/1.

This high average was principally due to the 85.8 mg/l BOD g reported in our letter of May 2, 1986. The 6.75 mg/l value observed from the sample obtained on April 29 indicates that the corrective actions described in that previous letter have been effective, and therefore no additional corrective actions are planned.

Should you desire any further information regarding this report, please let us know.

Sincerely, Y W B. M. Marshall Manager Water Quality BWE/yo cc: Dr. J. Nelson Grace, USNRC - Docket Nos. 50-280/50-281 / 3 Mr. Harold R. Denton, USNRC - Docket Nos. 50-280/50-281 Mr. Donald J. Burke, USNRC - Docket Nos. 50-280/50-281 8605140243 860507 PDR
