e COR 14-06 Vepco VIRGINIA ELECTRIC AND POWER COMPANY, RICHMOND, VIRGINIA 23261 May 2, 1985 CERTIFIED MAIL RETURN RECEIPT REQUESTED Mr. Ray R. Jenkins State Water Control Board Piedmont Regional Office 2201 West Broad Street Richmond, Virginia 23230 Surry Power Station - NPDES Permit Exception

Dear Mr. Jenkins:

This is to confirm the NPDES permit exception at our Surry Power Station that was reported to you on April 30, 1985.

On April 30, 1985, the analysis of a sample of effluent taken from the Sewage Treatment Plant, Outfall 008, on April 29, indicated a total suspended solid level of 36.5 mg/1. Analysis of a sample obtained on April 10, 1985 indicated a total suspended solid level of 31.6 mg/1. The monthly average calculated from these results,is 34.1 mg/1, which exceeds our maximum monthly average limit of 30.0 mg/1.

As corrective action, station personnel are utilizing a synthetic seed to promote bacterial action. This should improve treatment of the suspended solid load and reduce the amount of suspended solids discharged.

Should you have any questions regarding this exception, please do not hesitate to contact this department.
