U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Docket No. 5 0.-3,39 Region II Permit No. CPPR-78 101 Marietta Street, Suite 3100 -

Atlanta, Georgia 30303

Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

Pursuant to the provisions of 10CFR50.55(e) the NRC Region II was notified on March 14, 1980, that the shaft fans for bcth Unit 2 auxiliary feedvater pump motors had been installed improperly and that the condition could have led to possible motor failure due to excessive motor and motor bearing temperatures during pump operation. The incorrect fan installation was discovered while disassembling auxiliary feedwater pump motor 2-F4-P-3B as a result of high bearing temperatures observed during initial motor tents.

Both pump motors were taken to att outside electrical equipment company where they were repaired by interchanging the inboard and outboard shaft drive fans thereby situating them in their correct location. The motor-driven auxiliary feedwater pumps have since undergone extensive testing during which acceptable pump data was obtained.
