PLANT SHUTDOWN GREATER THAN 72 HOURS On April 13, at 8:25 p.m. CDT, operators at River Bend Station initiated a normal reactor shutdown. At 11:29 p.m. the reactor shutdown was completed by inserting a manual scram at 30 percent reactor. power as prescribed by the normal shutdown procedure At that time, the plant entered Operational Mode 3, Hot Shutdown. As of 11 a.m. on April 14, the unit was at approximately 250 degrees F and was proceeding to cold shutdown.

The plant shutdown was deemed necessary after operators identified a main generator hydrogen seal oil leak at the main generator casing. During and after the shutdown, the licensee monitored for hydrogen accumulation in the turbine building, but none was identified. The licensee had previously planned a facility shutdown later this month to repair a main generator hydrogen leak and a main turbine steam leak. The licensee plans to complete repairs to the generator and turbine and then return the plant to power. The shutdown is expected to exceed 72 hours8.333333e-4 days <br />0.02 hours <br />1.190476e-4 weeks <br />2.7396e-5 months <br />. The date to retum the unit to oower has not yet been established.

The state of Louisiana will be informed.

Region IV received notification of this occurrence by phone from the Senior Resident inspector at 8:30 p.m. on April 13. Region IV has informed the EDO, NRR, and PA.

This information has been discussed with the licensee and is current as of 11 a.m. on April 14,1998.
