_x_ Not Applicable SU1 JECT: SHUTDOWN IN EXCESS OF 48 h0VRS On February 19, 1988, at 10:01 a.m. (CST), with River Bend Station at 100 percent power, the 'A' reactor recirculation pump motor tripped on an over-current condition. Reactor power was lowered to less than 50 percent and the plant was stabilized while the cause of the pump motor crip was investigated. The investigation revealed low megger readings to the pump motor.

An orderly plant shutdown was continued at 11:45 a.m. with plans to go to cold shutdown for necessary repairs. The plant outage is expected to last at least seven days. The Senior Resident Inspector is following the licensee's actions.

There have been no news media inquiries regarding this matter.

Neither the licensee nor the NRC plans to issue a press release.

The state of Louisiana will be informed.

Region IV received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the Senior Residerit Inspector at 1:40 p.m. on February 19, 1988. Region IV has informed NRR.

This information has been confirmed with a licensee representative.
