The infonnation is as initially received without verification or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the Region IV staff on this date.

OU 4GE GREATER THAN 72 HOURS On September 30, 1988, the licensee performed a special test of the main steamline ',olation valve (MSIV) solenoid operated valves (SOV) as described in NRC Information Notice 88-43, "Solenoid Valve Problems." Two out of eignt S0Vs failed. The failure of the solenoids on the B and C inboard MSIVs would have prevented fast closure of those valves. The redundant outboard MSIVs operated as designed. As a result of these test results, the licensee comenced a reactor shutdown on September 30, 1988. The plant will be shutdown for between 4 to 7 days to perform maintenance and corrective o.tions on the MSIV S0Vs, recirculation pump seals, and other items.

Neither the licensee nor the NRC plans to issue a press release.

The state of Louisiana will be informed.

Region IV first received notitication of this occurrence by telephone from the Senior Resident Inspector at 2:45 p.m. on September 30, 1988. Region IV has informed NRR, SP, and PA.
