Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

[.

! .e> s j In accordance with the requirements of Oconee Nuclear Station, Technical ,

Specificatien 6.6.2.2.d, this report is submitted describing-ajcondition in which measured levels of radioactivity exceeded the control level by greater than 50 times (Location 000.7) and 10 times (Locatien 005.2).

On August 14, 1981, analytical results of surface water samples collected l

during the second quarter of 1981 were reviewed. A summary of pertinent l analytical results is given below:  !

l i

! Sample Locatio_n_ Date Collected Tritium Concentration 000.3 Hwy. 183 Bridge N. of 04/07-06/02/81 1.40 E2  ;

site. Lake Keowee (Control) 000.7 Hwy. 183 Bridge S. of 04/07-06/02/81 9.13 E3 site. Lake Hartwell  !

005.2 Hwy. 27 Bridge - Lake 04/07-06/02/81 1.98 E3 Hartwell Tritium concentrations in downstream water samples are dependent upon the ,

tritium concentrations of liquid effluent released from the station. For the period of April 1 to June 30, 1981, a total of 170.1 curies of tritium were released from the station in liquid effluents in accordance with Tech-nical Specification release requirements. Based on this release information, it is calculated that the activity released in the Keowee Hydro Station Tailrace was 1.16 E3 pCi/l during the second quarter of 1981.

l If an individual was to drink 730 1/yr of water at Location 000.7 (the closest i drinking water intake is more than 10 Km downstream), containing 9.13 E3 pCi/l of tritium, the maximum dose estimate would be 0.7 mR/yr. The maximum dose .

estimate of an individual drinking water from Location 005.2 (1.98 E3 pCi/1 of tritium) would be 0.15 mR/yr. Therefore, it is concluded that the observed anomalous tritium concentrations do not adversely affect public health and safety.
