SUBJECT: NRC REGION I INSPECTION REPORT NO. 50-289/93-16 This letter transmits the findings of the announced, safety inspection conducted by Mr. H.
Kaplan and Mr. A. N. Ray nf this office during the periods of August 2 - August 6,1993, and September 20 - September 24,1993, at the GPU Nuclear Power Station, Three Mile Island Unit 1, Middletown, Pennsylvania.
The inspection was directed at areas imponant to public health and safety and was conducted in the two phases: one just prior to the refuelling outage and the second one during the.
refueling outage. The first phase of the inspection centered around the review of'the inservice inspection (ISI) program, scope of the work for the outage, and tue erosion / corrosion monitoring program and procedures. The second phase of the inspection <
focused on nondestructive examination aci ities related to inservice inspection and steam

generator tube inspection. The results of to inspection were discussed with members of i vour staff at the exit meeting. Your ISI .: f NDE activities were found to be planned,
,trolicd and documented properly. One area of weakness was noted as an unresolved
-, This is the lack of a formal program to conduct surveillance of ongoing ISI and assion/ corrosion activities. Your staff acknowledged this finding and committed to review
this issue. No violation was found during this inspection; therefore, no response to this letter j' is required.
