GENERIC LETTER 92-08, "THERMO-LAG 330-1 FIRE BARRIERS," THREE MILE ISLAND NUCLEAR STATION UNIT NO.1 (TMI-1)

Dear Mr. Langenbach:

On April 20,1999, the Commission granted to GPU Nuclear, Inc., (GPUN) an Exemption from the requirements of 10 CFR Part 50, Appendix R, Section Ill.G.c.2 for TMI-1 to the extent that they reqeire the enclosure of cable and equipment and associated non-safety-related circuits necessary to achieve and maintain safe shutdown in a fire barrier having a 1-hour fire endurance rating. In our forwarding letter we indicated that the requested exemption had been denied for fire zones AB-FZ-3, AB-FZ-5, AB-FZ-7, and FH-FZ-2. Additionally, the exemption for fire area CB-FA-1 and fire zone FH-FZ-6 was contingent upon completion of commitments identified in GPUN letters dated October 14, November 25, and December 23,1998.

Please provide, within 20 days of receipt of this letter, a description of your proposed corrective actions for the above fire zones. Additionally, please confirm that those corrective actions and the additional commitments identified in your October 14, November 25, and December 23,1998, letters will be completed by December 31,1999, as committed to in your annual update of your long-range planning document dated November 25,1998, " Annual Update of Integrated Schedule Long Range Planning Program," or provide adequate
