.c e - ..= v . ou ... January 7, 1986 Mr. Harold R. Denton, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U.S. Nuclear L gulatory Commission Washington, D.i.. 20555 KMLNRC 86-002 Re: Docket No. STN 50-482 Subj : Revised Response to Request for Additional Information on 10CFR20 Exemption Ref:1. KMLNRC 85-167 dated July 1, 1985, from G.L. Koester, KG&E to H.R. Denton, NRC

2. Letter dated September 5, 1985, from B.J. Youngblood, NRC, to G.L. Koector, KG&E
3. KMLNRC 85-246 dated November 8, 1985, from G.K. Koester KG&E, to H.R. Denton, NRC

Dear Mr. Denton:

Kansas Gas and Electric Company (KG&E) requested an exemption to 10CFR20 respiratory protection requirements in Reference 1. NRC questions on this request were transmitted via Reference 2. Reference 3 provided KG&E's response to these questions. The response contained in Reference 3 should be revised as described below.

The first sentence of the response to question 7c should read, "Tempe ra tu re and dew point will be measured at the beginning of a shif t in the area where the GMR-I cannister will be utilized, except if the plant is in mode five (5) or six (6)." The addition of the word except reflects the fact that in modes five (cold shutdown) and six (refueling) there should be no concern with excess temperatures and humidity causing premature cartridge failure.

If you have any questions please contact me or Mr. Otto Maynard of my staff.

Yours very truly, D K 2 Glenn L. Koester Vice President - Nuclear GLK:see Ok xc: P0"Connor (2), w/a D JCummins, w/a (
