AUG t i 1989  :

Docket No. 50-282 Docket No. 50-306 Northern States Power Company ATTN: Mr. C. E. Larson Vice President, Nuclear Generation 414 Nicollet Hall Minneapolis, MN 55401

Dear Mr. Larson:

This acknowledges your August 9, 1988 letter which provided the current status of your test item developement to support an NRC administered requalification examination at Prairie Island during the week of October 24, 1988.

We have evaluated the activities you indicated wi.11 be occuring in the same time frame as our proposed exam. Further, the number of test items you have estimated to be available by August 24, 1988 would be insufficient for our purposes. Based on the above, we have determined that your request to delay the '

exam scheduled for the week of October 24, 1988 is acceptable.

t As an aside, review of your letter revealed a possible misinterpretation of draft Revision 5 of ES 601. You indicated that ten systens were selected for training during the current cycle which appears to correlate to the 10 systems referenced for evaluation in ES 601. The guidance in ES 631 regarding the ten t systems for requalification evaluation purposes is not be censtrued as a recom-mendation or guidance by the NRC to limit the scope of traini.ig to ten systems.

Your program, if SAT based, should identify the systems which require continuing training.

Any questions you may have regarding this matter may be directed to me at 312/790-5695 or Tom Burdick at 312/790-5566.

Sincerely, ORIGINAL SIGNED SY GE0lRE( 0jtRlGHt_
