nos rarssonst p"") ONM NUCLEAR PRODLCTKMe September 22, 1986 Mr. Harold R. Denton, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D. C. 20555 Attention: Mr. B. J. Youngblood, Project Director PWR Project Directorate No. 4 Re: Catawba Nuclear Station, Units 1 and 2 Docket Nos. 50-413 and 50-414 Technical Specification Amendment

Dear Mr. Denton:

Attached is a clarification to my letter dated June 6,1986 concerning the addition of the Boron Dilution Mitigation System (BDMS) for Catawba Unit 1. The enclosed Technical Specification additions are necessary to show that the Source Range Reactor Trip instrumentation is not needed when the Reactor Trip breakers are in the closed position and the Control Rod Drive System is capable of rod withdrawal.

This was previously noted as applicable to Unit 1, but should be shown as being applicable to Unit 2 as well. Also, the change requested to Surveillance 4.9.1.3 (which should now be shown as applicable to Unit 2 only) is applicable to ACTION 5 of Table 3.3-1.

Very truly yours,

.A n  ;
