SUBJECT: - NRC INTEGRATED INSPECTION REPORT 50-293/97-07

Dear Mr. Boulette:

On August 16,1997, the NRC completed an inspection at the Pilgrim Nuclear Power L

Station in Plymouth, Massachusetts. The enclosed report presents the results of that'

inspection.

- During the 7_ weeks covered by this inspection period, your overall conduct of activities at

<the Pilgrim facility was focused on safety principles. This was evident during the

execution of a planned maintenance downpower and also during the good design _and

' installation of a welded repair patch to address through wall pipe leakage in a salt service

water (SSW) system spool piece.  ;

The security program was also inspected during this period. The inspector determined that -

you are implementing a security program that effectively protects public health and safety.-

The closed circuit surveillance system was in need of improvement. .

In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the NRC's " Rules of Practices," a copy.of this letter

and the enclosed Notice will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room.
