O cp We were informed on June 24, 1980 by Metropolitan Edison, our electricity i
1 supplier, that there would be an approximate 14% increase in our cost of power, effective immediately. The increase will come as a result of a readjustment to the rate schedule, as approved by the Pa. Public Utility Commission, based upon the Three Mile Island incident. The 'comission is not only. removing rates that were in effect when T.M.I. was operating but they are also pemitting Met-Ed to recover a large portion of the expense incurred as a result of the accident.
The added cost is particularly appaling because a large part of the cost increase is the result of indecisions and delays that are preventing bringing unit one at T.M.I. b.ack into operation, which was undamaged in the mishap. We realize that your agency is under considerable pressure, particularly from the non-scientific comunity, that is causing delays in decissica making. We believe, however, that it is time to ignore those whose efforts to date have only resulted in stalling the inevitable increase in nuclear power generatton.
Met-Ed has. been forced to buy a large portion (about 55%) of the energy they are supplying to their customers because they have not been permitted to restart unit one. The higher cost, as a result of the delay, is being passed on to the household consumer as well as industry.
Patterson-Kelley Co. , like all other cornercial entities, is under constant pressure to hold the price line, while at the same time realize a reasonable profit.
The 14% increase in electricity cost will add considerably to inflationary pressure throughout the Met-Ed service area.
This letter then is an appeal, both personally and on behalf of Patterson-Kelley Co. , to do everything in your power to expedite the start up of unit one at T.M.I.
It is time to remove the barriers that are preventing the increased use of nuclear power as the principal energy generation source in the United States, c'$ , Respectfully yours.
