February 25, 1980 Mr. Harold R. Denton, Director Serial No. 856A/101179 Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation PSE&C/GLP:lga Attn: Mr. O. D. Parr, Chief Light Water Reactors Branch No. 3 Docket No. 50-339 Division of Project Managerent U.S. Nuclear Regulatory (nmtission Nashington, D.C. 205F5

Dear Mr. Denton:

EtWIPONMENTAL QUALIFICATICN OF CIASS IE INSTFWEN']ATION AND ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT This letter is in response to your letter of October 11, 1979 entitled

" Environmental Qualification of Class IE Instruttentation and Electrical Equipment." Prior to receipt of your October 11 letter, m had already

. done extensive review of this subject under I.E. Bulletin 79-01; it is for this reason that Bulletin 79-01 is referenced in the title of the enclosure.

We have enclosed ten copies of our summary on equipment qualification. '

We would like to point out that the radiation levels shown during accident conditions are very conservative, because they are based on values on the inside of the shield wall. Previous subnittals have shown that radiation levels outside the shield wall are attenuated by factors of 100 to 1000.  ;

All safety rolated instruments are located on the outside of the wall.

'No potenHally unqualified items were addressed in a subnittal on North Anna Unit 1, a copy of which is attached.

We have also subnitted further justification for use of the Rosenount 1152 transmitter in a separate letter Serial No. 055/011080, Environmental Qualification of Roserount Transmitters North Anna Power Station Unit 2.

If you have any questions concerning this subnittal, please contact this office.
