t.McGuire Nuclear Station i Response to IE Bulletin 79-24 A review of the design of McGuire Nuclear Station has revealed that adequate protective measures have been taken to prevent safety-related process, instrument, and sampling lines from freezing. All safety-related piping buried outdoors is covered by a minimum of 24 inches of soil.

This piping is therefore buried below the Charlotte area frost line, which can vary from 12 to 20 inches. All safety-related lines located in covered trenches or supported above the ground are heat traced and insulated.

In addition the vent and instrumentation lines on the RWST are heat traced, monitored for low temperature, insulated, and covered with stainless steel sheathing.

Duke Power Company is also in the process of providing heat tracing on the RWST overflow and recirculation lines. These modifications will be complete by January 1, 1980.
