During an internal audit in November 2016, the sampling plan for dedication of plastic jars used in 1 E battery cells was reviewed.

Two lot numbers are associated with each plastic jar, a material lot number and a molding number. A material lot may encompass several molding lots. The dedication sampling plan was based on the material lot, and may not have properly sampled variations in critical characteristics generated b) molding lots. An analysis of historical data is underway to determine whether any deviations to specifications for critical characteristics may have occurred, and whether these possible deviations could represent a defect as defined by Part 21. C&D expects that this analysis will be completed by March 20, 2017. Retraction of Interim Report -Plastic Jar Dedication Sampling On January 20, 2017 C&D Technologies submitted an interim Part 21 report regarding the issue of dedication of plastic containers used in nuclear safety related battery systems. In the interim report C&D reported that an internal audit had discovered an issue with lot numbers used to perform sample selection for parts dedication.

Dedication sampling and testing had been based on larger material lots vs smaller molding lots. A detailed review of plastics dedication testing has been performed by C&D. )"his review concludes that the sampling issue does not pose a substantial safety for Class 1 E products in the field. This review included analysis of field and return data (cracked jar incidence rate below 0.002% and no operability failures), confirmation that the critical characteristics of material identification and strength were properly sampled, and confirmation that the dimensional analysis that was performed from 2011 to present never resulted in the rejection of any plastic lots. Based on this review the Interim Report (NRG Log No. 2016-00-06) dated January 20, 2017 is retracted.
