SUBJECT:

NRC BULLETIN 88-01. DEFECTS IN WESTINGHOUSE CIRCU!T BREAKERS (MPA B-100)

JOSEPH M. FARLEY NUCLEAR PLANT, UNIT 1 (TAC NO. 67665)

NRC Bulletin 88 01, dated February 5,1988, requested holders of operating licenses or construction permits to provide letters of confirmation to the NRC of the completion of specified inspections on Westinghouse series 05 circuit breakers.

Addressees not having series 05 circuit breakers in Class 1E service were requested to provide a letter to the NRC stating this fact. By letter dated April 14, 1988, you advised that the short and long-term inspections of such reactor trips and bypass breakers were completed on March 8,1988 for Units 1 and 2.

Also, by letter dated June 9,1988, you advised that inspections were completed of all other Class IE breakers in Unit 1. Sixty.seven breakers (nine 05-416 and 58 05-206) were inspected. Sixty-six breakers had pole shaf ts which failed the Bulletin 88-01 criteria. Due to the extensive repairs being made, the NRC staff '

! requested that you provide detailed data for evaluation. Your letter dated July 12, 1988 provided the requested data. Submittals of such additional data for Unit 2 will not be necessary.

On the basis of your actions to resolve Bulletin 88-01 (MPA B-100), as described herein, we consider the Unit 1 issue to be completed. We understand that the action for the remaining series OS circuit breakers on Unit 2 will be completed i during the next refueling outage scheduled to start March 24, 1989, i

Sincerely.
