PLANT SHUTDOWN TO REPAIR LEAK IN ORAIN LINE OFF "A" MAIN STEAM LINE On September 9. 1997, at approximately 12:00 p.m. (CDT), the licensee began a reactor shutdown af ter a steam leak was identified in the steam tunnel. The leak was on a capped drain line off the "A" main steam line, between the two main steam isolation valves. The cause of the leak was a 180 degree crack in a welded joint at a 2-inch to 1 inch reducer. The main turbine generator was removed from the grid at approximately 6 p.m.

In addition to repairing the drain line. the licensee intends to inspect similar drain lines for possible crocking.

The outage is expected to last approximately three days. During the '

outage, the licensee also plans to replace the "A" electrohydraulic control pump and perform other balance of-plant maintenance.

The resident inspectors observed the plant shutdown and will monitor outage activities and plant startup.

The State of Iowa will be notified. The information in this preliminary notification has been reviewed with licensee management.
