SHUTDOWN TO REPAIR UNQUALIFIED ELECTRICAL SPLICES j

On-December 9,1986, the-licensee notified ' Region III (Chicago) that ,it_was shutting down

'because' 200 electrical splices may not meet environmental qualification requirements. The

< iAMP splices were supplied.by the General Electric- Company.

LThe licensee' discovered'the problem after initiating an investigation following notification

.that similar~ AMP-splices at-the Dresden and Quad Cities Nuclear Plants had been found to be Jenvironmentally~ unqualified (see PNO-III-86-142). The licensee was informed of the Quad ~ Cities /Dresden problem during the week'of November 30, 1986.

The repair involves wrapping each splice with tape which meets environmental qualification -

requirements or replacing the splices. <

A.special Region III inspection will review the splice problem and the licensee's corrective

' action.. The Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation has been informed. The generic (implications are already being pursued as a result of Dresden/ Quad Cities.

The State of Iowa will be notified.
