Subject:

THROUGH-THE-WALL CRACK IN RECIRCULATION PIPING (SECOND UPDATE)

The unit resumed operation at 4:30 a.m. (CST), July 19, 1985, concluding a scheduled maintenance and refueling outage which began on February 2, 1985. During this outage, sch:duled Inservice Inspection and inspection as set forth in NRR Generic Letter 84-11 revealed several through-wall cracks and crack indications on welds in the Recirculating Syst:m piping. (See PN0s-III-85-22,22A).

These cracks and indications have been repaired by the weld overlay method. These repairs were monitored closely by Region III specialists and by analysis of the repair data by both the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation and Region III. All weld overlay repairs were found to be acceptable.

A r: circulating system integrity hydrostatic test was successfully completed on July 1, 1985. An integrated leak rate test (ILRT) was also successfully completed on June 30, 1985. These tests were reviewed and witnessed by a Region III specialist.

Preparations for restart and the unit restart were monitored by the resident inspectors.

The State of Iowa will be notified.

This information is current as of 9 a.m. (CST), July 19, 1985.
