SMA,LL FIRE INVOLVING A 480V MCC BREAKER During a routine tour of the plant, a Plant Radiation Technician noticed smoke coming from a 480V motor control center. The panel was opened and a small fire was noted in the supply breaker. The feeder breaker to the motor control center was opened and the fire was quickly extinguished.

Preliminary information from the licensee indicated that the fire was m confined to the breaker and was apparently caused by a faulty auxiliary

relay coil. The licensee is investigating the cause to determine if there is potential generic implications with regard to the combustibility

., of the insulation.

There was no loss of power to any essential components since the affected bus automatically transferred to the redundant power supply.

The plant is presently shutdown for refueling and the occurrence did not .

result in a plant shutdown or interrupticn of outage work.

l No press release is plann.ed by the licensee or Region III (Chicago).

The State of Iowa is being notified of this even't.

This PN is being issued in consideration of the high visibility which is associated with reactor plant related fires.

Region III (Chicago) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the licensee at 3:51 p.m. on May 9,1977.
