June 24, 1976 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF SAFEGUARDS EVENT -- PNS-76-28 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE national security or public interest significance. The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff as of this date.

Facility: Iowa Electric Light and Power Company Duane Arnold Energy Center (DAEC) (DN 50-331)

Subject:

BOMB THREAT At 2:10 p.m. on June 23, 1976, a secretary in the general office of Iowa Electric Light and Power Company (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) received a telephonic bomb threat.

The secretary, who works for the Vice President of the Corporation's Eastern Region stated that the caller was a male adult, seemed mad, talked fast and had an excellent command of the English language.

When the caller asked to talk to the Vice. President (by name), the secretary informed him that he was out of the office. '*

He then asked her to give him a message far him. This message was, "Tell him one of these days the Atomic Plant DAEC will be blown up."

( The local FBI (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) was notified at 2:40 p.m. on June 23, 1976.

No bomb was found.

Plant personnel instituted a search of the facility.

Few visitors were on site today, all were recognizable security patrols.
