Subject:

JET PUMP RISER CRACK Iowa Electric Light and Power Company notified Region III that a 3" long l crack was found in a ten-inch recirculation system line. The crack, <

which is spraying water, is in the horizontal run and appears to be in the Inconel transition piece between the pipe and the vessel nozzle.

l The reactor'had shutdown on June 17, 1978 due to an unrelated problem experienced during a surveillance test. Primary system leakage was l' l observed to be increasing before the shutdown. * * -

' It is anticipated that an outage o,f at least two weeks will be required to complete the repairs.

1 Region III and the licensee intend to issue a press release. The State of Iowa is being notified.  !

Region III (Chicago) received notification of the reactor shutdown and -

system leakage by telephone from the licensee at about 1:15 p.m. on '

June 17,1978. The location of the crack was identified on June 18, 1978. This PN reflects available information as of 8:00 a.m. on June 19,1978.
