The information is as initially received without-v rification or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the Region III staff on this date.

HANDGUN FOUND ON CONTRACT EMPLOYEE At 7 a.m. (CDT), April 8,1987, a licensee contract employee set off an alarm as he walked through a metal detector at_the entrance to the protected area.

S:curity officers discovered that the individual was carrying a small .22 caliber handgun in his jacket pocket. The gun was loaded with five bullets. The individual said the weapon had been in his pocket from the night before and that he had forgotten to remove it.

Tha licensee is investigating the incident. The individual has agreed to take a polygraph t:st, and is under guard-escort in the protected area. The individual has had access to all vital areas within the plant except for the central alann station.

The NRC's Information Assessment Team has been notified. RegionIII(Chicago)isfollowing tha licensee's course of action.

The State of Illinois will be notified.
