PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURPENCE--PNO-III-87-10 Datn January 22, 1987 i This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information is as initially received without verification or evaluation, and is basically all that is kncwn by the Region III staff on this date.

LOSS OF COMPONENT COOLING WATER SYSTEM On January 21, 1987 both of the Unit I component cooling water pumps tripped in succession, rend; ring the system inoperable for a 14 minute period.

Unit I was in cold shutdown at the time of the event. The initial fuel loading was ccepleted in November 1986 and the plant is undergoing precriticality testing.

At 6:02 p.m. (CST), the 1A component cooling water pump tripped due to low component cooling surge tank level. The IB pump started automatically, but tripped due to the low surge tank 1cvel. An operator restored the surge tank level and restarted the 1A pump at 6:16 p.m.

(CST), restoring system operability.

Following preliminary evaluation of the event, the licensee declared it to be an Alert under its emergency plan at 6:25 p.m. (CST) and terminated the alert at 6:40 p.m. (CST).

Th2 cause for the low surge volumes for both the A and B trains of the component cooling system is not known at this time. The licensee is evaluating the event to determine why this occurred and the resident inspectors are monitoring their evaluation.

The State of Illinois was notified of the event by the licensee at 6:38 p.m. (CST) on January 21, 1987.

The Headquarters Duty Officer was notified of this event at 7:58 p.m. (EST), January 21, 1987. This information is current as of 12:00 noon (CST), January 22, 1987.
