II Docket No. 50-275 l
MEMORANDUM FOR: William V. Johnston, Assistant Director for Materials, l
Chemical and Environmental Technology, Division of Engineering FROM:
L. S. Rubenstein, Assistant Director for Core and Plant Systems, Division of, Systems Integration
SUBJECT:
REQUEST FOR APPROVED DEVIATIONS FROM THE REQUIREMENTS OF SECTION III.J OF APPENDIX R TO 10 CFR 50 - DIABLO CANYON UNIT 1 (TAC 52060)
As requested by the Chemical Engineering Branch (ChEB), the Auxiliary Systems Branch has reviewed the applicant's July 15, September 23. and November 4, 1983 submittals regarding the request for approved deviations from the requirements of Section III.J of Appendix R, " Emergency Lighting."
Based on our review, we conclude that the applicant has proposed an acceptable means of assuring adequate emergency lighting for the required access and egress, and the performance of safe shutdown functions in the event of a fire, equivalent to that achieved by compliance with Section III.J. Thus, we recomend that the applicant's.regoest for approved deviations be granted.
Our safety evaluation report is attached.
We understand that ChEB is currently evaluating new illumination level require-ments for emergency lighting systems.
The illumination level stated in this SER is to document the applicant's comitment to provide an illumination level that has been previously accepted by the staff.
