.C NOTIFICATICE OF POIENTIAL P10BLEM REGARDING THE 10 TR 50.49 EQUIPtENT QUALIFICATION DEADLINE

-Gentlemen:

s In accordance with the reglirements of 10 CFR 50.49(h), Georgia Power Campany (GPC) hereby provides notification of eg2ipment gialification

- problems which could reallt in a reglest for extension of the gialification deadline L (i.e., end of the second refueling outage after March 31, 1982, not

to exceed March 31, 1985).

The problems encountered reallt. from the inability of PYOO, Inc. to provide. docamentation which completely demonstrates environmental gialification for certain Resistance Temperat11re Detectors (RIDS) alrrently

-lin use at Plant Hatch.

GPC had ass 2med that PYCD would be able to gialify

'its IUDS l for continued use at Plant Hatch.

Upon discovery that this would not _ be possible, GPC decided to replace the PYO0 RIDS with a similar type from Weed LInstrument Conpany, Inc.

The Weed devices are envirornentally

- gialified for' the intended Plant Hatch applications.

7-GeorgiaPowerd Director of M1 clear Reactor Regulation Attention: Mr. John F. Stolz, Chief Operating Reactors Branch No. 4 ally 19, 1984' Page 2Wo -

GPC plans to conplete the necessary replacement of PYOO RIDS with the appropriate gialified instruments (11 ring the Hatch-2 outage alrrently in progress. However, the scheduled ten-week Unit 1 outage, which should begin arourx3 the first of October (which serves as the eglignent gialification deadline' autage per 10 CFR 50.49(g)), may not be of alfficient duration to allow for replacement of all RIDS needed to meet the reglirements of the gialification rule.

Therefore, GPC may be reglesting an extension of the gialification deadline in - the near future for a portion of these Hatch-1

. devices.

Encloalre 1 to this letter provides a listing of the PKD RTDs on Unit 1 which are being replaced to meet the environmental 91alification nile.

GPC previously albnitted information regarding problems with the qualification of the albject eglipment by letter dated April 3,

1984 (NED-84-076).

The information in this albnittal updates and alpersedes the PYCD RID related information contained in that earlier letter.
