THE 10 CFR 50.49 EQUIPMENP QUALIFICATION DEADLINE l

l Gentlenen:

In accordance with the requirements of 10 CFR 50.49(h), Georgia Power Conpany (GPC) hereby provides notification of equipnent qualification problems which could result in a request for extension of the rulemakirg deadline (i.e., end of the second refueling outage after March 31, 1982).

The problems beirg encountered involve the qualification testirg program for the post-accident hydrogen and oxygen monitoring system heat tracing apparatus. 'Ihis heat tracing is to be installed at Plant Hatch Unit 2 during the upcoming refueling / recirculation pipe replacement outage as part of the GPC program for meetirg the requirements of NUREG-0737. GPC was informed by the equipment verxior on November 9, 1983 that the testirg program might not be conpleted by the forecast qualification deadline.

Current plans call for coupletion of the heat tracirg qualification program by September 1984; however, the currently projected Hatch Unit 2 qualification deadline (end of the upcoming outage) is before September 1984. Due to many uncertainties inherent in the recirculation pipe replacement project, it is not possible to exactly predict the end date for the scheduled outage. . the regulatory deadline. Should it be determined that the deadline cannot '

be met, or should the heat tracing equipment fail to meet the qualification testing _ criteria, then GPC will subnit a request for extension of the deadline as prescribed by 10 CFR 50.49(g) .
