20555 NRC 00CKETS 50-321, 50-366 OPERATING LICENSES DPR-57, NPF-5 EDWIN 1. HATCH NUCLEAR PLANT UNITS 1, 2 ENVIRONMENTAL QUALIFICATION OF SAFETY-RELATED EQUIPMENT Gentlemen:

In response to Mr. Eisenhut's letter dated October 1, 1980, Georgia Power Company (GPC) provides the following information.

GPC is willing to participate in the establishment of standardized equipment environmental qualification acceptance criteria. We are currently defining the scope of supply of equipment needing environmental qualification and identifying aventes by which that qualification may be obtained; i.e.,

individual efforts, ovners group efforts or vendor efforts.

The results of the I&E Bulletin 79-0. B review identified the majority 1

of the outstanding items as being within the NSSS (GE) scope of supply.

These items may be best addressed by a cooperative owners group effort. The EPRI-UEQ BWR Owners Group, of which GPC is a member, is addressing the equipment qualification issue at its next scheduled meeting, the first week of December, 1980.

Following the owners group meeting, GPC should be better able to identify a course of action for its equipment qualification efforts. At that time GPC will be in a position te comply with your request for pertinent informa-tion relative to environmental qualification test conducted within the next two years on equipment used, or to be used, in our facility.

Sincerely,

,m fs j..u-+....~--.w W. A. Widner
