In compliance with 10CFR Part 50 55 paragraph (e), we are hereby submitting the attached Significant Deficiency Interim Report concerning the Main Steam Line Restraints.

The AEC D0R I inspector was notified of this item during his site visit at Peach Bottom on November 8, 9, 1972.

1. AVAILABLE INFORMATION - DESCRIPTION OF OEFICIENCY Certain items of the Unit No. 2 Main Steam Line Restraints appear to be fabricated from a nonconforming material (based on preliminary laboratory reports of the material tested).

The apparent material nonconformances were identified during the review of a field welding problem.

3._AVAILABLE INFORMATION - CORRECTIVE ACTION .

The. field welding problem was resolved by using improved heaters to attain the required weld preheat.

An in-depth material testing program is underway to positively identify each item. A program is also underway to evaluate the shop fabiicated welds.

An engineering study is being conducted to determine the extent of this problem and appropriate corrective action.
