Subject:

Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station Units 2 and 3 Reactor Protection System Power Supply Circuit Breakers

Reference:

10 CFR Part 21 Report, S. L. Daltroff, PECo to Dr. T. E. Murley, NRC, dated June 16, 1986

Dear Dr. Murley:

The purpose of this letter is to inform you that the modifications at Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station Unit 3 to correct Reactor Protection System power supply circuit breaker deficiencies have been completed. The proposed modifications will be completed on Unit 2 during the spring 1987 outage, now in progress.

The referenced report notified the NRC of a manufacturing defect in Westinghouse Reactor Protection System (RPS) power supply circuit breakers at Peach Bottom along with our immediate and long term corrective action to prevent future failures. It was stated in the report that we expected to perform the modifications on the Unit 3 RPS power supply breakers during a mid-cycle weld inspection outage. By order modification dated December 31, 1986, R. M. Bernero, U.S. NRC to E. G. Bauer, Jr., PECo, the requirement for the mid-cycle weld inspections was withdrawn. Consequently, the mid-cycle outage was eliminated and the Unit 3 modifications were rescheduled and completed on March 9, 1987 during an unplanned outage.
