k 9 tate of Nem 3rrarg DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL DIVISION OF FISH, GAME AND WILDLIFE PROTECTION PLEASE REPLY TO:

RUSSELL A. COOKINGHAM CN 400 DLRECTOR TRENTON. NEW JERSEY 08625 February 14, 1984 Mr. Clarence Hickey c/o Nuclear Regulatory Commission Office P314 Washington, DC 20555 Daar Mr. Hickey:

This is in response to your request for information regarding unique or sensitive biota in the area of Oyster Creek. As you know, the area lies within the New' Jersey pinelands and the wildlife and vegetation are typical of that biome, in particular, we have several records of pine snakes (threatened-state) from the upland area near the Garden State Parkway and Old Tuckerton Railroad. Corn snakes (endangered-state),

though less frequent, are also known irom this area. Pine Barrens treefrogs (endangered-state) are known to inhabit- the wetlands along the south branch of the Forked River and wood turtles (threatened-state) have been reported on Oyster Creek.

We have no records of any endangered or threatened avi fauna from the area.

Use of the area by Osprey (endangered-state) and possibly other endangered or threatened- raptors (Cooper's hawk, red-shouldered hawk, northern harrier) is not'unlikely.

-As you requested, I have enclosed a current list of endangered and th-eatened wildlife.in New Jersey.

' iLve also forwarded your request .to the appropriate fisheries and game Llologists for thei r response.

I hope this information is useful to you.

Sincerely, O /.

C. David Jen Ins, Jr.

changing and when habi tats change, some spe- 6 cles survive and others decline. In New Jersey habi tat change is partially responsible for the decline of 54 endangered and threatened species. The Endangered and Nongame Species Program is responsible for protecting these species found in the state.
