Dear Mr. Keppler:
On October 7, 1982, Mr. T. D. Geib of Public Service Company of Indiana, Inc. (PSI) notified your office of a potentially reportable item as required by 10 CFR 50.55(e) . During the installation of the Unit 2 containment polar crane three cracked welds were discovered on the end tie beam flanges. The impact of these cracks on the structural integrity of the crane has not been determined at this time. PSI has requested the crane manufacturer and designer to investigate these weld failures and make recommendations for the disposition of these deficiencies.
Any corrective action which may be necessary will be based upon these recommendations.
This letter is intended to fulfill the requirements of an interim report as defined in 10 CFR 50.55(e). A further report will be filed I on or before January 28, 1983. If you have any questions on this report please feel free to contact me.
