INDIANA S. W. Shields September 30, 1983 Senior Vice President - S81-18 Nuclear Division SVP-0131-83 Mr. James G. Keppler, Docket Nos.: STN 50-546 Regional Administrator STN 50-547 U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Construction Permit Nos.:

Region III CPPR - 170 799 Roosevelt Road CPPR - 171 Glen Ellyn, Illinois 60137 Marble Hill Nuclear Generating Station - Units 1 and 2

Dear Mr. Keppler:

On December 8,1981, Mr. T. D. Geib of Public Service Company of Indiana, Inc. (PSI) notified your office of a potentially reportable item as required by 10 CFR 50.55(e). PSI Quality Assurance personnel discovered that existing procedures did not require specification /

design changes made via engineering change notices, specification amendments, or drawing revisions to be contractually imposed on suppliers or contractors. This created the potential for speci-fication/ design changes to be lef t unincorporated in the as-built configuration of safety related equipment or structures.

Procedural changes were made which required that specification /

design changes be contractually imposed on suppliers and contractors.

PSI implemented a special process procedure to verify that manu-factured items and materials met the most current requirements of

, the' specifications. These actions were completed and reviewed. As a result, it was found that not all of the concerns of the original potentially reportable item had been addressed. PSI is now working to address those remaining concerns.

This letter is intended to fulfill the requirements of an interim report as defined in 10 CFR 50.55(e). A further report will be filed on or before February 17, 1984. If you have any questions regarding this matter, please contact me at your convenience.

Sincerely, l

0O hk6 PDR . W. Shields gg]
