Dear Mr. Keppler:
On November 18, 1983, Mr. L. G. Yeager of Public Service Company of Indiana, Inc. (PSI) notified your office of a potentially reportable item as required by10CFR50.55(e). Colt Industries was notified by an ASME Survey Team that the diesel generators they supplied for Marble Hill had component support welds that were accepted by an inspector not qualified to the requireme.nts of ASME NF5521. Colt Industries then reexamined the previously accepted welds and found some to be deficient. PSI determined that these deficiencies could impair the ability of the diesel generators to perform during or after a design basis event. .
PSI is currently evaluating the nonconformances and will then proceed to imple-ment the necessary corrective actions. This letter is intended to fulfill the thirty (30) day reporting requirements of 10 CFR 50.55(e) and is considered an interim report. A further report will be filed on or before April 13, 1984.
