Dear Mr. Keppler:

On August 5,1982, Mr. T. D. Geib of Public Service Company of Indiana, Inc. (PSI) notified your office of a potentially reportable item as required by 10 CFR 50.55(e). Westinghouse identified an undetectable failure mode which could exist in on-line testing circuits for their Solid State Protection System (SSPS). This potential failure mode was discussed in detail in PSI's letter to you dated January 14, 1983 (SVP-0001-83). That letter also said that Westinghouse was reviewing alternatives in design changes. Westinghouse has since notified PSI that they have developed a design that eliminates the previously described. problem. Westinghouse further stated that the hardware modification is presently being tested and upon successful completion of testing, field kits will be provided to affected plants. Upon receipt of this field kit PSI will ensure that the corrective action is completed.

This letter is intended to fulfill the requirements of a final report as required by 10 CFR 50.55(e). If you have any questions regarding this matter, please contact me at your convenience.

Sincerely, l M S. W. Shields SWS/LGY/bak g
