Docket No. 50-458/I&E Bulletin 81-03 4

50-459/I&E Bulletin 81-03 This letter is our final response to I&E Bulletin 81-03, " Flow Blockage of Cooling Water to Safety' System Components by Corbicula sp.

(Asiatic Clam) and Mytilus sp. (Mussel)." The preliminary results of our assessment were submitted to your office by letters dated July 10, 1980 (should be corrected to read July 10, 1981) and September 14, 4 1981. Our previous submittals identified the types of instrumentation used to detect flow blockage and the components and systems which may be affected by the infestation of clams. The submittals also mention the methods of control, chlorination treatment and upflow clarifiers, that will be applied at the River Bend Station facility to prevent the larvae and clam infestation.

As a result of Gulf States Utilities Company's (GSU) further review, GSU concludes that the components, systems and methods identified in the assessment are adequate to prevent or detect flow blockage in each system. This completes our response to I&E Bulletin 81-03.
