Mr. Darrell G. Eisenhut, Director Division of Licensing U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Washington, D. C. 20555

Dear Mr. Eisenhut:

On June 24, 1981 Gulf States Utilities Company (GSU) submitted Section 2.1 of Enclosure 3, " Request for Additional Information on Control of Heavy. Loads," to your December 22, 1980, letter. GSU informed your office on September 30, 1981 that the remaining work on Sections 2.2 and 2.3 of Enclosure 3 should be complete by November 30, 1981. This letter is a status report of our continuing investigation with regard to Sections 2.2 and 2.3 on' the control of heavy loads.

GSU has not completed its investigation of the control of handling heavy loads to the schedule reginested in your letter, because of the magnitude of the scope of work required. Our investigation is now anticipated to be completed during the first-quarter of 1983. As you are aware, River' Bend Station's (RBS) projected commercial operation date has been extended to December, 1985. Because RBS is in its construction phase, no danger exists from the dropping of a' heavy load onto or near spent fuel which may adversely affect the operations of the nuclear power plant.

Upon' completion of our investigation, the results and any updated information will be included in the RBS Final Safety Analysis Report.

Sincerely, I .# j J. E. Booker Manager-Technical Programs River Bend Nuclear Group JEB/RJK/kt~
