! Gentlemen: i f River Bend Station - Unit 1  !

Docket No. 50-458 '

I Gulf States Utilities (GSU) on July 14, 1989 provided a response to Generic  !

Letter 88-14, Instrument Air Problems ,in Light Water Reactors. In this i response GSU stated that all particulate testing results were below l manufacturer's allowable particulate size specifications.- This conclusion

was based on an initial evaluation. Subsequent evaluation of.the test  !

results by an independent source has discovered that one instrument air

' header, the drywell containment header, contained a number of particles which f a did not meet applicable acceptance criteria. One test point which has. a  !

maximum allowable particle size 'of 40 microns contained a small number of  !

. particles 60 microns in _ size. Another test point on the header with

. acceptable USAR limits of . 5 microns had a small number of 10 micron  !

. particles. ,

GSU has evaluated the results of this instrument air particulate test and .l

!. determined that because of the low concentration of particles in excess of  !

g" the acceptable limits, no safety or operability concerns for any equipment  !

are created by this finding. Further engineering evaluation is being pursued l on the containment /drywell header particulate sample. This evaluation will i be completed by January 31, 1990. Within 30 days of completion of this evaluation, GSU will submit a report to the NRC.
