Reference:

Licensee Event Report # 85-021-00, Docket #050-374, dated May 29,1985. "RCIC Leak Detection Mis-wired."

The enclosed letter is to inform you of a change to a corrective action that was transmitted with the Reference letter.

A corrective action listed in LER 85-021, on page 3 stated; "Long term corrective actions include a mechanism to insure that all Leak Detection local temperature sensors are heat checked on a periodic basis to validate proper wiring. Also all modifications to the Leak Detection temperature monitoring sensors and cabling will include a functional test initiated at the sensor." This corrective action to heat check all Leak Detection local temperature sensors on a periodic basis was an over commitment that did not address the root cause of the problem. The root cause

, was an original construction mis-wiring of the detection sensors. This corrective action to perform a periodic check of the sensors will be discontinued. LaSalle has performed these surveillances for the past eleven years and the data shows that no additional mis-wiring problems have been discovered. All modifications to the Leak Detection temperature monitoring sensors and cabling will still include a functional test initiated at the sensor to identify any wiring problems.

1 This action will result in a substantial dose reduction and eliminate unnecessary work.
