EVENT DESCRIPTION

Technical Specification 3 7 5.1.a requires two operable fire suppression diesel driven fi re pumps. With one fire pump inoperable, the inoperable pump is to be restored to operable status within 7 days.

On 5/12/82, while performing LOS-FP-W2 the 0A Diesel tripped after 2 minutes into the run.

The diesel could not be run for greater than two minutes thereaf ter.

V.

PROBABLE CONSEQUENCES OF THE OCCURRENCE During the time that the OA Diesel Fire Pump was 11 operable, the OB Diesel Fire Pump was available to provide fire protection, as was the service water system.

Adequate fire protection was maintained at all times.

VI.

CAUSE

While performing LOS-FP-W2, an operator shorted out the starter on the OA Diesel with the engine oil dipstick. This action caused control circuit damage, rendering the diesel inoperable.

Vll. CORRECTIVE ACTION Work Request L15587 was written to repair the diesel control circuitry.

The work request was completed on 5/13/82 and the diesel was tested and found to be operable.

To prevent future recurrence, the starter connections at the diesel have been insulated with electrical tape.

Other connections having the possi-bility of shorting were also taped on both the OA and the OB Diesels. This work was done under work request L15586.
