High to Low-Enriched Uranium Application It is hereby requested that the date for submission of the low enriched uranium conversion application be extended from July 5, 1988 to March 6, 1989. While the staff of the Rhode Island Nuclear Science Center with major input from the RERTR staff at Argonne National Laboratory is working diligently to prepare the information for the safety analysis report, this extension is required because of the work which still remains for selection and validation of a low enriched core for this facility. The details of this were discussed with Mr. T. Michaels at a meeting in Washington on May 25, 1988.
This extension will not require the fabrication of HEU fuel as the fuel on hand is sufficient for operation.until'the LEU fuel
, is operational. In this regard, the Department of Energy has informed us that the contract for fuel fabrication for this facility will be issued after October 1989 with fabrication taking place in early 1990.
