The license to - operate the.2 MW research reactor at the Rhode-Island Nuclear Science Center is issued to the Rhode

. Island Atomic . Energy Commission, an agency of the government of the State of Rhode Island. The Commission was established pursuant to Title 42, Chapter 27 of the General Laws of Rhode Island. Section 42-27-2 authorizes the Commission to construct and operate a research reactor.

Section 42-27-4 authorizes the General Assembly to annually appropriate a sum sufficient for the Commission to carry out the purposes of the Act. The Act providing for the establishment of the reactor is contained in Chapter 142, Laws of 1958.

From this legislation, the Rhode Island Atomic Energy Commission is impowered to perform everything necessary to operate the reactor including decommissioning, s ,

The cost of decommissioning the reactor facility is estimated at $2 million in 1990 funds. This estimate has been made using the information contained in NUREG/CR-1756

" Technology, Safety and Costs of Decommissioning Reference Nuclear Research and Test Reactors" and the known cost of the fixed price contract for the decommissioning of the hhhhhhhkhhk '
