File Nos. G9.5, G9.20.8 Mr. Harold R. Denton, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C. 20555

Dear Mr. Denton:

River Bend Station - Unit 1 Docket No. 50-458 In response to a request by the Equipment Qualification Branch (EQB), the following information is being provided. On August 30, 1985 General Electric Company (G.E.) identified to the NRC a condition involving three test anomalies of Reliance Class RH AC motors. These test anomalies raised concerns with the long term availability of valve operator motors employing magnesium rotors. Gulf States Utilities Company (GSU) addressed this concern in its July 24, 1985 10CFR50.55 (e) evaluation report of Reliance motors with magnesium rotors (RBG-21,683).

The following points are provided for clarification.

1. GSU's July 24, 1985 letter identified two valves (1E12*MOV42A and B) which were potentially affected by the conditions identified by G.E. These valves are identified in the Environmental Qualification Data Master List as 1E12*MOVF042A and B. These designations refer to the same valves.
2. The Environmental Qualification Data Master List indicates the model number for these valves as Limitorque SB-2-60. G.E.

indicates anomalies with the Limitorque SB-3-150 operators.

Both model numbers are correct in their respective

/

applications. GSU's evaluation encompassed all safety-related Reliance motors with magnesium rotors including the specific model numbers identified by G.E.

3. Procedural changes to Emergency Operating Procedures have been implemented for proper valve alignment..
4. The attached markup of the Environmental Qualification Data Master List and System Component Evaluation Work (SCEW) sheets provide consistency with GSU's July 24, 1985 letter.

Sincerely, a co B<4 J. E. Booker Manager-Engineering Nuclear Fuels & Licensing River Bend Nuclear Group JEB/RJK/amg Attachment
