Dear Mr. Hairston:

l

SUBJECT:

NRC BULLETIN 88 09, " THIMBLE TUBE THINNING-IN WESTINGHOUSE REACTORS,"

l ACTION FOR JOSEPH M. FARLEY NUCLEAR PLANT, UNITS 1 AND 2 (TAC NOS. 71293 AND 71294)

On July 26,.1988, NRC Bulletin 88-09 was issued to all holders of operating licenses for Westinghouse designed nuclear power reactors using bottom mounted instrumentation. Licensees were requested to establish and implement an inspection program to periodically confirm the thimble tube integrity of the incore neutron monitoring system.

Your letter dated November 2,1988 provided your response to the Bulletin. In that response, you described the eddy current program in use at Farley since 1986. The program is used during each refueling outage consistent with the Bulletin. You also noted that you will participate in the Westinghouse Owner's Group for additional actions.

We reviewed your response ~and agree that you have addressed those items requested.

Thus, your. response is satisfactory.

Sincerely.
