Dear Mr. Jorgensen,

After a brief phone conversation with the local USNRC resident inspector at Big Rock Point nuclear power plant, he indicated that he will remain in his current position until October 1999 after which there will be no resident inspector. While we appreciate that he will remain until October, we strongly urge you to consider extending his position at least another year or more. We prefer that he remain until"greenfield" conditions occur.

When $300,000,000 is being spent to dismantle and store plant waste, we are concerned that there are many potential dangers and shortcuts that, perhaps, only a resident inspector would catch and prevent, and certainly more likely than planned inspections and visits. l Though we suspect that his salary is not part of the $300,000,000 it is costing to dismantle and store plant waste, it seems a relative minuscule amount to retain his services and, if a mishap were to occur that could have been prevented by his presence, his salary would be truly an infinitely small investment relative to the clean up that would be required. The resident inspector informed us that his tenure is related to government-wide position reductions. While we are sure his understanding about this matter is honorable, in this instance that translates to a convenient govenmental excuse for removing the resident inspector at a time when safety and adherence to standards and procedures should be ofpreeminent concern. They are to us.

We ask you to retain his full-time position at Big Rock Point nuclear power plant until "greenfield" conditions occur. Please advise us as to your decision.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

,2 -
