' Request for Additional Information - Catawba Nuclear Station The staff has reviewed your submittal dated November 20, 1985, regarding the Elimination of Arbitrary Intermediate Pipe Breaks for the pressurizer -

surge lines and main feedwater systems at both units. The staff has con-cluded that your submittal does not adequately address their concerns.

The specific informatien needed to complete the staff's review of this issue is herewith enclosed. Please respond to this request no later than April 15, 1986.

Provide additional details describing the design features incorporated in the Main Feedwater Systems of both units, and operational procedures that would be followed to minimira the occurrence of water hammer in the piping system. An acceptable level of detail on this issue is contained in Attachments F and G to a letter from D. E. Swartz, Commonwealth Edison to H. R. Denton, NRC, " Byron Station, Units 1 & 2 - Elimination of Arbitrary Intermediate Pipe Breaks," dated November 15, 1985.
