Dear Mr. Tucker:

Subject:

Data and Information Capability for Post-Trip Review - Item 1.2 'to Generic Letter 83-28, Catawba and McGuire Nuclear Stations, Units 1 & 2 By separate but similiar letters dated November 4, 1983 and by telephone call on May 23, 1985, Duke Power Company responded to Generic Letter 83-28 Item 1.2

-for McGuire and Catawba Nuclear Stations, Units 1 and 2. Item 1.2 regards data ,

and information capability for post-trip reviews. On the basis of review of these responses, the NRC staff with the technical assistance of our contractor, Science Applications International Corporation, prepared the enclosed Safety Evaluation Report (SER). The SER concludes that with the exception of the record retention period for data and information used in post-trip reviews, the post-trip review data and information capabilities for McGuire and Catawba Nuclear Stations are acceptable.

Since comoletion of the enclosed SER, the staff has received your letter of May 24, 1985, responding to our telephone discussions of May 23, 1985. That letter states that the period of retention for data and inforf.ation used for post-trip reviews has not yet been established. Consequently, this portion of our review remains open and will be completed once Duke's decision has been provided. Except for this matter regarding the record retention period, cur action on Item 1.2 of Generic Letter 83-28 is completed.

Sincerely, -

5Thomas M. Novak,fAssistant Director for Licensing Division of Licensing
