t j 4 Federal Emergency Management Agency Washington, D.C. 20472 O O JUN 1 gggg MEMORANDUM FOR: Brian Grimes Director Division of Emergency Preparedness U.S. Nu lear Re ulat ry Commission FROM: I ea . Kri Assistant Associate Director Office of Natural and Technological Hazards

SUBJECT:

Status of the LaSalle Nuclear Power Station Formal

  • Submission under 44 CFR 350 (proposed)

Review of the Illinois State Plan for Radiological Accidents (IPRA) site-specific to the LaSalle Nuclear Power Station is currently being finalized in FEMA headquarters in accordance with 44 CFR 350 (proposed).

The IPRA site-specific to LaSalle was submitted to members of the Federal Radiological Preparedness Coordinating Committee (FRPCC) for their review and comment. FEMA received no negative comments on the plan from any of the FRPCC members.

In the latest LaSalle joint exercise conducted on April 14, 1982, it was demonstrated that the remaining outstanding deficienclea were corrected with the exception of the prompt alerting and notification systems. The adequacy of the alerting and notification system will be verified at a later date. As indicated in our supplemental interim finding prepared on January 26, 1982 and as demonstrated during the April 14, 1982 joint exercise, there is reasonable assurance that the appropriate protective measures can and will be applied offsite in the event of a radiological emergency and that the plans and preparedness for offsite protection near the LaSalle Nuclear Power Station are adequate to protect the health and safety of the public. We anticipate that formal approval of the LaSalle Plan will be made this week.
